 I have tried using two different SMTP servers with the same result. Any other ideas/

 the DNN Send uses .Net framewok sendMail method. you need to make sure, the mail server is reachable from the web server and not blocked by a firewall or sth like this.

 It's now giving me the following error:

There has been an error trying to send the test email. The error is:
Request for the permission of type 'System.Net.Mail.SmtpPermission, System, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.

 The Following settings are what is needed for godaddy to work with dnn 5:

relay-hosting.secureserver.net:25
