I would have to agree, the concept of the open source community is that it is "open" to the general public, that means the code whether or not compiled is readily available without a fee being charged.  I would have to agree that a large development community would ideally have more free based modules available.  And now I see that the former "Community Modules" page does not appear to exist anymore or has been hidden much better then what it was prior as I can not find it now on dotnetnuke.com.  If some one happens to know where this magical page that contained links to many free modules online has gone please post a reply here, pretty please ;-).

Hello:

I am not sure what you mean by "But, quite amazingly, all the modules in the modules directory are commercial ones & hardly found any usefull free module, as in contrast with the joomla extensions community".  What module directory are you referring to?  If so amazed why did you switch?

Here's a list of my modules: Bold are not Free, i.e. not a DNN project or offered free by a developer.  The one's which I did purchase are so dirt cheap they may as well be free.  I donate more to OpenSource programs such as Notepad++ or CCleaner, etc.  Also, my DNN account here is free.  Saying "Thank You" for a job well done to the DotNetNuke members who have shared time & talent is free.  I do have to pay for my notebook, my house, my car and the gas it uses.

This is true, but it does not mean that such initiatives require X amount of free stuff.

What's a good ratio for this size community in terms of free stuff vs. size of community?  The number of free modules has been going up as well, and maintaining excellent quality.  Two, rather than one, free crappy modules is still crap.  I really don't think there would be enough free stuff for those who cannot appreciate the current good stuff, and endevour to improve upon it or other new efforts.

The big thing is to look at what you are getting and just to look around for modules.

I have many free ones available from my site, http://www.mitchelsellers.com but once things get to a certain point developers have to feed themselves somehow and that is why there are so many commercial modules as well.
