OK, so I have a client with a rich MS CRM installation.  They are looking at re-doing the "members" part of their website, and in many ways DNN is a great solution for them.  BUT they need to do their member login/password/credentialling in their CRM (the complexity of the membership is already being handled there.)  The CRM is able to receive via a web service a username/password, and then pass back pass/fail and any relevant user information I would need - but how would I use this data in a DNN site?

A complicated solution would (I imagine) try to synch up the data - but DNN would pretty much always be out of date, since staff are constantly making updates to the CRM.  New users wouldn't get access, old users wouldn't be shut down... Seems painful.  The whole point of the web service is to allow me to have current user data.

Suggestions?

Overall, I would most likely look at building a custom authentication provider that reaches out to the external system and allows users in, updating the DNN information that is needed each time they login.  (First name, last name, email).

I have a product, External Database Authentication Provider, that does this to a SQL Server database.  It is very easy to modify it to use a web service instead with a little C# knowledge.  But it would be a great starting point if you were looking to do something yourself.

Otherwise, feel free to drop me an e-mail at msellers@iowacomputergurus.com as we do custom implementations for people all the time as well.
