Hi there,

I was trying to install a fresh, new instance of DNN Community 5.1 (I know it's a beta) on a development box however after doing everything correctly - setting up a DB, editing the web.config I am dogged by the following error:

Configuration Error

Description: An error occurred during the processing of a configuration file required to service this request. Please review the specific error details below and modify your configuration file appropriately.

Parser Error Message: It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level.  This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS.

Source Error:

Line 78: </system.webServer>
Line 79: <system.web>
Line 80: <machineKey validationKey="***" decryptionKey="***" decryption="***" validation="***" />
Line 81: <!-- HttpModules for Common Functionality -->
Line 82: <httpModules>
Line 78: </system.webServer>
Line 79: <system.web>
Line 80: <machineKey validationKey="***" decryptionKey="***" decryption="***" validation="***" />
Line 81: <!-- HttpModules for Common Functionality -->
Line 82: <httpModules>

Source File: c:\inetpub\wwwroot\dnn_dev\web.config    Line: 80

I have played around with IIS and I just can't seem to get past this error. There has never been a previous instance of DNN on this box and setup should be easy however this has held me up for hours - can someone please help?!?

I am having the same exact issue.  Did you happen to find a fix?  Please let me know as I cannot setup 5.1 on my Vista machine.  Thanks.

My guess would be that the folder you are using as the root of the DNN instance has not been set as an application in IIS.  In IIS, right click on that foldername and go to Properties, on the Directory tab, is the Application name dimmed out?  If so, click the Create button.  If that doesn't fix it then someone else will need to chime in.  Cheers - Jeremy

Configure your DNN installation folder as an application in IISA or install in the root folder of your web site.  Nothing to do with DNN, this is basic ASP.NET and IIS configuration.  Google would find you tons of instructions if you're having trouble.
