Hi all...I'm not new to DNN, but am not a developer, so I've got a question I'm hoping someone can help me out with...

I have a client that has an installation of DNN (not sure which version) and had a custom module written for them.  They are in search of the source code of that module as the developer of the module has vanished.  There are some fixes needed with the module and are wondering if anyone can even fix the module if they have no access to the source code.  I'm just trying to identify whether they need to start over with a new module or they have the potential of finding the source code.

Are they out of luck?  Or is there a chance they could find this on their server somewhere?

Any help whatsoever would be appreciated.

Thanks,

TW

 TW,

it depends, how the module is developed and which kind of changes are required to get to know, if it is posible to modify the module accordingly or (parts of) it are needed to be redeveloped.

If the module was deployed with the source code included, you will most likely see a files for it under the /app_code/ModuleName folder, you will also see .cs or .vb files inside the /desktopmdoules/modulename folder.  If this is the case, most likely it will be farily easy to modify.

If you don't have the source code there, it will not be very easy to work with.  Cosmetic changes MIGHT be possible, depending on the nature of the mdoule and the layout, but changes to functionality wouldn't be possible.

Honestly, it might be best to just start from scratch, if it isn't a very complex module.

Definitely look to see if the vb files are in the related App_Code and/or DesktopModules directories first. If the code was compiled to a DLL, that are good programs out there that can de-compile (not the right term but can't think of the right term right now) it. Red Gate's .NET Reflector will let you see the code and is free... I think it can do the full de-compile but don't remember for sure.
