Some of the (relatively) high price of hosting is more for historical reasons than anything else. To get sql server hosting a few years ago was expensive as sql server cost $3000/processor (though ISP's also got bulk discounts), which the host had to then divide across the estimated number of sites, to ensure their margin. As SQL 2000 still costs the same, but Microsoft let you treat a hyperthreaded CPU as a single CPU, along with the increased power of servers in the meantime, hosts can now get many more sites onto their hardware, meaning lower cost per site. Some of the more agile hosts are passing their savings onto customers, whereas some are using the additional margins to enhance profit.

If you search about, you can find deals from $6.95/month such as the godaddy deluxe plan (though AFAIK they do not give you web.config access), through to deals such as the one on infosaic which use sql express to keep costs low. I'd also recommend a search through the hosts resource directory http://www.dotnetnuke.com/tabid/702/Default.aspx , as those hosts will all have DNN experience.

I have been having a play around with DNN4Free and have bought a module calles H2O ...

It seems I can't upload it as I don't have host access ...

Is this right ? thats the way it's been setup ?

Does PowerDNN offer host access ?

Hey FireAnt,
You are correct - at DNN4Free you can't upload modules because that would create a security concern for everyone else on the site (for example, you could upload a custom module that would delete all portals).  At PowerDNN, we definately give you HOST access and we also give you FTP access and SQL Server access as well.  You can do pretty much anything you want to your site - if you have a custom version of DNN you want to run, that's fine with us too - Infact, you don't even have to run DNN, our servers can handle PHP just fine too, but why would you want that?  :)

Always glad to help,

Ya know .. I still don't quite understand why you get so little hard disk space on a windows hosting environment.

Hard disk space is cheap ....

What I would recommend doing is evaluating whether you really need insane amounts of space that you'll never use.  If you're an individual who cares about quantity over quality, then the hosts that advertise so much (low quality) space are where you should be looking.  If you're a business, I would say you should really evaluate the quality of what you're looking for.  You're right - disk space is cheap, but what kind of disk space is it?  IDE, Scuzzy, RAID, SAN, etc?  How often is it backed up?  How fast is it?

Not all gigabytes are created equal.

One gig really is a ton of space for web hosting.
