Hello, Everyone.

I dabbled with DNN 4.x about a year ago, trying to use it as a simple intranet site in my office.  I had it working on my PC but I never got it to run on the network, most likely due to my own lack of knowledge and experience.

I want to try DNN again, but not for the same purpose.  I'd like to start by using DNN to make a new version of my buddy's hobby website, which is mainly just a picture gallery and comment/forum sections.

After that, however, I'd like to get into module development (I have some experience with VB.Net and C#) and build a site which will perform industry-specific functions for which I currently use some clunky VBA macros I've written.

I guess the point of this post is to ask for suggestions:

1.  What version of DNN should I use to get started?
2.  What host should I use that would allow for easy set-up to get started on the hobby site but also allow for smooth transition when I'm ready to begin module development?  ...and one that is affordable?
3.  Can/should I use the same version of DNN for the basic, hobby site as I would for developing custom content?
4.  I have both VS 2005 and 2008...do you recomend on over the other?

Thanks for your help,

Brad

(1) If you're just getting started you may as well jump into the latest version of DNN 5.x rather than the latest 4.x as 4.x is considered to be in its final version (4.9.4) with little or no further enhancements/support.

(2) Which host?  I like to use cheap-but-no-DNN-support hosts (becasue they're cheap and I don't require much help).  Others prefer to pay extra to host with DNN-centric providers who can lend a a hand with DNN support.  There is no simple answer -- it really depends on how much help you need and what you consider to be affordable.

"Best host for DNN?" is a very common question.  See this thread for additional thoughts:
http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Forums/tabid/795/forumid/118/threadid/321540/scope/posts/Default.aspx

(3) For starters, yes, use the same version.  Regarding development: if you intend to sell modules/skins then you'll eventually end up creating a number of test installations covering a range of DNN versions so you can validate your product(s).  Your hobby site may not need to be upgraded immediately with each new DNN version but your development efforts should always include installing and testing your products with each new DNN release.

(4) Either is fine, IMO.  If you have 2008 you may as well use that in order to take advantage of the better javascript support.  Besides, VS2010 is nearly here (you probably don't want to get -too- far behind the current version, right?)...

Cheers!

Thanks...what a great and timely response!

Which DNN package do you recommend?  If I start out on the hobby site with just the install package, what will I have to do if I decide to extend or customize the site?  Does using the install package restrict what you can do with the site in the future?

Thanks, again!
