Both the attach / detach and backup / restore options are not usually supported or provided by hosting companies who provide shared SQL hosting. That's why this is difficult. Yes of course I could create a backup and ask my host to restore it once in a while but they are unlikely to want to do this on a regular basis.

Please, does anyone regulary update their hosted database, if so how are you guys doing it with MS SQL 2005 and not loosing IDENTITY column info.

Thanks

Mark

p.s. I 've been able to use the export function of MSDE Manager by Vale Software but come on, this is 3rd Party software written originally for MSDE users as an alternative to Enterprise Manager. Surely Microsoft have a tool that works.

If your host does not give you the ability to back-up and restore your database yourself (either by control panel or SMS)...then it's time to reconsider your host.

My Host allows backups to and from the actual server the database is hosted on. I've used numerous hosting companies over the years and these guys rock. Great security, super fast servers, amazing support. I'm sure that other host lock down there servers in this way.

So do you use a host for MS SQL 2005 ASP.NET 2 DNN hosting? If so can you take a locally created DNN database and move it to your host?

All I'm asking is for someone in the same situation as me who has a working solution. I understand the options available and have working solutions with DNN3 - MS SQL 2000, Enterprise Manager etc. I just have issues with SQL 2005 and exporting/importing data.

If you have this same setup and have a working solution it would be great to know who you host with and what tools you use to move you data from local to host.

Thanks

Mark
