if your SMTP server requires authentication, you need to specify a valid user name and password in Host Settings :: SMTP Settings.

For the record, I'm getting the same error.  I'm also using gmail smtp servers.  The host settings are correctly configured and I can successfully send test emails all day long.  However, whenver I try to actually send emails from my application, I get the error.
Is there some special flag we're supposed to be calling before we call

DotNetNuke.Services.Mail.Mail.SendMail() ?

Is there a chance that the way I'm calling the SendMail function is actually causing the problem?

if the SMTP server limits the sender's email address, you might have to use the address specified in SMTP configuration. To achieve this with Newsletter module, enter that address into "From" and use the email address you want to get replies to as "Reply To" address. Please note, that DNN cannot overcome the SMTP servers security restrictions.
