I'm wondering if there is, or will be, any guidance on creating custom themes for the Events module to better fit with different skins.

The next version of Events 05.00.03 will have a number of additional themes. Essentially, the current themes (.css files) could help you to create your own theme. Every part of the theming is done through .css classes, where the class names are self describing.

Do you have specific questions re theming?

Nothing specific.  I will do some digging through the existing themes and see if I can make some changes so that the colour scheme matches a bit better.
