I am trying to figure out how to install DNN V5.1 on ,mylaptop which is running Vista Business and SQL 2008.   I only need to create an occasional module and develop a few skins.

I do not want to install IIS etc on my machine. Directions assume that I am (or will be) using IIS.

I downloaded the install version, unzipped it and then opened it in VS2008.  It asks me if I want to convert it to .NET 3.5 .... I said no.  Then I started without debugging....got the install wizard. It will not let me choose the Auto method of installation.  I have no idea why not but iif I choose the other options it wans all sorts of info about a database.....but there is no DB yet.....it hasn't created it.  I just need simple, clear instructions about how to make this work.

Thanks

Visual Studio does include an adhoc web server, however this is running only if VS is running - I prefer to install Windows IIS instead, which allows more granular administration (you can start/stop the service if needed using "iisreset /start" and "iisreset/stop" from the command prompt).

Regarding the database, especially for development you have to be able to access the database using SSMS, therefore you should create a blank attached database and grant dbowner permission to local "Network Service" account or whataever account you choose for your web server process/app pool to run.

Use IIS if you can.

Simple and clear:  Install IIS.  Otherwise you can't use any of the automated installation and you'll need to configure many things yourself, with little help.
