I haven't read the book. I haven't read the help. I haven't installed. I HAVE watched on of the videos and am impressed.

Before I invest a lot of time into this could I get a couple of questions answered, please?

I'm about to volunteer to build a website for a bee keeper club. Since I won't be charging I don't want to spend endless hours on it but these are good folk and I want to help them out.

1) I am running XP Home - can I install and build the file locally then upload it to the domain? They haven't gotten their domain yet and I'd like to get a head start.

2) Does DotNetNuke include a forum?

Ummm, that looks like that's it. Thanks for considering my questions.

1) Yes -- however you'll either need to use Visual Studio 2005 or 2008 and use the starter kit or you'll need to download an ASP.NET webserver such as Cassini (http://ultidev.com/products/Cassini/)

2) Yes -- the core one (same one you just posted on) is included.  Alternatively you can purchase one; ActiveForums (http://www.activemodules.com/) is a really good one and they have a few varieties including a free one.

Good luck... you'll like it!

*EDIT* -- You'll also need SQL Server Express (2005 or 2008) (http://www.microsoft.com/express/sql/default.aspx) on your XP machine to host the database.  If you were on XP Pro you wouldn't need to download an ASP.NET webserver because it has IIS 5.1 built-in you would just have to enable it through "Windows Features"

Rick,

I would suggest you visit http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Products/OnlineDemo/tabid/1239/Default.aspx

You can create a sample web site and get to work with DNN.  Since you are new to DNN, that is going to be a lot easier than trying to work with Starter kits and Web Developer Express which you may never need at at.

Also, do look at the free version of ActiveForums.  It is very nice and if you need to, you can upgrade to one of the paid versions at any time.  http://www.activemodules.com/products/activeforums.aspx

Not easily.  XP Home doesn't have IIS, so you'll need to run it under Visual Web Developer.  Better is to get a host, it only takes a couple minutes to register the domain and sign up for a host.

You're reading it now.  :)

This site is running the DNN forum on DNN.

Thank you gentlemen. I have Visual Studio 2005. I have SQL Server. I'll download a web server. I'm excited. This sounds like fun. Since I'm not getting paid for helping these folks out I would like to at least enjoy myself at it.
