Ok,

I get the jist of what dotnetnuke is.  I understand how it works, system administrator, guest, power user, all that stuff.  What I can't seem to find on the site is how I get started.  I've been doing web for several years now.  I'm not super experienced but I can build a website, get hosting, etc.  I don't understand and can't see how I get started with dotnetnuke.  Can someone please help?

Stan

Web portals can be a confusing topic if you are not used to them.  You can learn more by watching the video at the following link.

http://dotnetnuke.com/About/WhatIsDotNetNuke/tabid/777/Default.aspx

It’s basically a website that doesn't require you to use an HTML editor to make changes.  It also enables advanced features to be added very easily such as blogs, forums, discussions, photo albums, news feeds, and many more.

But do I need to install something before using it?

Dot Net Nuke is a web application.  It requires the following to operate:

  • Microsoft webserver Win2000 / Win2003 / WinXP Pro
  • Microsoft SQL Server SQL2000, SQL2005, or SQL2005 Express

If you have these, you can setup a DotNetNuke portal.  You can also sign up with a hosting company that will pre-install it for you.  I currently use a company that offers to setup the portal for you on one of my DNN sites.  Because this DNN is open source software, they don't charge anything extra to set it up.

If you want to set this up on your own server, check out the guide that I made by clicking HERE

Good luck in your DNN adventure.

I'm starting to understand.  So it sounds like I need to have a server to set it up on right?  Running one of the OS you mentioned?  And I get that I can buy web hosting that offers dotnetnuke, but where do I come in?  Meaning, how do I start to build pages and such?  Does the host set it up and I just start adding pages like it says in the docs?  Sounds easy, but I prefer to have more control over my sites.
