Just finished creating the page / package for my Optimized Skin Objects Suite, hopefully it will fix your problems. I've rolled it into every version of DNN5 I put into production, and have noticed quite the improvement in page load times when accessing the login/register controls. Currently it includes a new USER and LOGIN skinobject, I'm planning on adding a few more of the customized objects over the next couple weeks. Let me know how it works for you.

Cool - will check it out!

Quick question - how do you install it? Has it changed since 4.9.x? Do I install it as an extension and edit my skin?

In DNN 5, Skin objects are installed like other extensions and need to be referenced properly in your skin.

Thanks Sebastian. Any idea why they are not direct links? I tried to raise a Gemini issue to have the skinobjects converted (minimal effort, maximum performance/usability gain ;) - but the page just refreshed and I am not sure if the issue saved...

An update to my monologue:

John Mitchell from Snapisis (creator of PageBlaster) - has helped me work through a number of problems so now PageBlaster is up and running again. It makes a MASSIVE difference (seriously, if you run a DNN site and you are not using PageBlaster you'd better have a good reason! (it's only $59!!). I don't get paid to say this ;)

HOWEVER... my users are still complaining about how slow the site is when logged in. PageBlaster does not cache stuff when authenticated (although it does do compression and merging so helps a little) - BUT the point is - DNN 5.x runs a LOT slower with the exact same client payload than DNN 4.x (the point of this thread).

I am looking at optimising graphics, CSS and a whole lot of other stuff but I am really dissapointed in the performance of DNN 5.x - I would stay on DNN 4.x for as long as possible (according to your business requirements). I also highly recommend switching to Olivers Login/Register skin objects (no skin changes needed) for a quick, massive speed boost for the user.

If, like me, you had to upgrade to 5.x, then please share some performance tips.  Mitchel Sellers has some more performance tips on his blog...
