We are looking to host a website with a VPS solutions company. They offer MySQL 5.0 as a standard package which we have not used before. We currently use MSSQL Server 2005 with our other DNN systems and would like to know if MySQL would work with a DNN system that is likely to experience a lot of traffic.

If this will work is there anywhere we can go to outline what is needed to set it up.

Many Thanks

Steve, to use DNN with MySQL, you need dataproviders for both the core framework and all modules. AFAIR there has been a user publishing a core provider for DNN 4.8.x with very few core modules, but AFAIK it hasn't been updated since. be aware, that you will need at least 1GB of dedicated RAM if you are running DNN on a machine, MS SQL Server may eat up another GB.

(I'm afraid my post is coming too late...)

In theory, DotNetNuke allows you to change the dataProvider to use other systems such as Oracle or even MySQL.
In practice, it requires to have such a provider for the version of DotNetNuke you use. It's true for the Core scripts, but also for all modules you want to use. You will also have to get MySQL scripts for updates if you intend to update your instance.

I knew there was a company which sold Oracle DataProvider but I don't if it exists for MySQL.

Thank you for your reply. If I understand you correctly, using MySQL will mean that the modules we currently use with MSSQL Server wont work with MySQL. However, we can get a DNN site up and running with MySQL but only if we source the dataproviders from someone like AFAIK. The RAM required isn't a problem so would you suggest that we continue to use MSSQL Server 2005 and refrain from using MySQL?

I have just realised that when you refer to AFAIR you mean 'as far as I remember'. However, I think I understood the context of what you were saying and that using MySQL over MSSQL Server would be a mistake.
