I can see taxonomy as potentially very useful, but I am not clear what can be done with it right now.

For example, is there a way to create a list of pages or modules on a site that contain a specific tag/category? That would be great - it would really allow for some nice content management features just using the html module together with taxonomy. But is this possible? Or will it be in the future?

Perfect timing. Chris Paterra just wrote a 6 part blog series on implementing / using Taxonomy in a module.

Basically, taxonomy allows content editors to categorize site content and folksonomy allows users to apply tags to site content (just another form of categorizing it). When people start applying categories/tags to site content, categories/tags (shown in the page or in modules) can then be clicked and search results for all content associated with those categories/tags. When you implement 5.3 it includes taxonomy (5.4 includes the folksonomy part) and when a user clicks a category/tag they will be navigated to a search results page that lists all content associated w/ the category/tag.

Keep in mind that neither Taxonomy nor Folksonomy are automatic, both require user (admin/author/whatever) intervention and both rely on knowledgeable users.  This is an area that works beautifully for proper content management and goes sideways very quickly when not extremely well controlled.  There's nothing that DNN, or any software, can do to help that situation.
