Hi all,
DNN version : 05.01.01 (98)
im a new DotNetNuke user, and am fairly happy with the product so far. But I've found a little issue and it turned out to be one from my own creation... so im here to pass on a warning, because i couldnt find any information about this on the internet! (shock horror!) and took some time to realise what the actual issue was.
I had created a site with various pages and levels of Hierarchy and everything was sweet... however, i got to a point where i wanted to start renaming some menu items with "..." in the title. So for instance a page once called "Install" became "Install..." So in my case, my site became something like this;
Tech Menu
...How to...
......Install...
.........RecFind 5.0
......Fix...
.........ASRI Printing issues
.........WMS Idle issue
I felt this was a fair thing to do, afterall i was matching the menu names (page titles) to form a complete sentance :) however using the button controls in DNN to control page hierarchy, strange things started to happen; such as pages being under other pages, but without a "..." prefix in the page listing! I encountered other strange problems like I couldnt add more than nine items to a menu! if i did it, it just didnt display the 10th item onward.
Other strange things like if i managed to remove a page from another menu and make it a top level page, from that point onward the page couldnt be moved up or down the listing of hierarchy! its like it was locked in place at the top of the list.
Sometimes other pages just disappeared from the main menu even though i could still locate and use them from the actual page listing!
Other things happened like "..." would get slapped on the front of a menu item even though it was only one level deep... so it would end up being "......menuitem"
Because of this issue my page hierarchy was badly stuffed! and after i worked out what caused this, the only way to fix it was to manually go into each page, ensure it doesnt have a "..." in its name and return it to the top level of hierarchy for it to be later moved to its correct position.
I would HIGHLY recommend to the DNN developers to disallow the use of the 3 dots as part of a page/menu description, its obviously used internally, and the version of DNN ive got (05.01.01) doesnt understand my description from its own internal use of the 3 dots.
I empathise for someone that has a huge site that employs the same technique i did...! Youre going to have many problems :(:( Learn from my mistake and just dont do it!!!!!!
Kind regards,
Chris
