I have a client that is (at the request of an SEO house) requesting that a site (currently running 4.9.5) be setup to display / crawl only the "root" URL Clarification:

Currently:  http://www.clientdomain.com/home.aspx

Desired: http://www.clientdomain.com

I've looked at the 'major' Rewriters available on Snowcovered, but I'm not sure how/if this would effect the core functionality or the sitemap.aspx.

Thoughts / reccomendations?

use IFINITY'S FREE URL REWRITER - it handles everything for you including 301 redirects, site maps etc ;)

Ifinity had been a consideration, however during a recent 'evaluation installation' of their product - I had EXTENSIVE problems removing the module (using their provided instructions) once the evaluation was over - eventually just had to nuke the site and start fresh. I'm always a bit hesitant on these products as they usually involve the editing / changing of the web.config and other modifications that make the long-term maintenance a bit of a P.I.A.

That being said, the eval was a while ago and I'm sure they've resolved that issue so I'll give them another peek.

Otherwise, are other site owners / developers seeing a considerable issue with this affecting page rank? I understand the "duplicate content" penalty, but I would *assume* the engines are smart enough to account for the root/home page and I doubt DNN is the only CMS that has this quirk.

Ifinity is the best url provider that I have used.  If I remember correctly, recent versions no longer require the need to manually edit web.config, so it may be worth another look.

Also, in addition to the /home.aspx duplication, there is the /default.aspx url, which also points to the homepage.  You may want to look into adding <link href="http://example.com/" rel="canonical"/> to the header tag in the home page's site settings, as that is the google recommended way of dealing with the multiple url issue.

Excellent idea, I'll give that a shot as well.

It does look like they've removed the need to manually edit the web.config in the more recent versions (iFinity) so I will probably take another look at it. Currently I'm considering either it or Snapsis' PageBlaster.
