Hi all.

I have a DNN theme I am currently constructing that is going to use a custom navigation menu which I am hard-coding into the skin template files.

It's going to be 2 sets of horizontal menus with drop-downs.

My question is this: Is there a way to get those drop-down menus to auto-populate with the child pages of their respective parent page, while still maintaining the custom graphics and styling of the parent level?

I think this screenshot will explain my issue better than I could. Please see below or go to http://designedbyevan.com/nav_example...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

If I understand you correctly, you can use this free CodingStaff Subnavigation module. This module allows to specify Page from which you want to show child items.

Check our dnn modules and dotnetnuke skins to see where you can start.

Thank you Tanya for the response! That module looks like it will be helpful and I am excited to try it, but a couple of questions first.

1.) Will I still be able to style the parent level to use the images that I have in my screenshot?

2.) When you say that the module allows me to "specify Page from which you want to show child items," I assume I can do this in multiple places, correct? I am going to need to have multiple parent-level nav items with drop-downs throughout all pages of the site. I have seen other modules that only get the child pages of your current page, but I need something that gets the child pages of several particular pages that I specify (not just the one that I am on).

Let me know if that makes sense. Thanks again!

 Hey Evster,

Personally, I wouldn't hardcode the navigation like that. It will probably cause headaches and more work in the future. (having to cut images, can't hide pages, page load, etc).

DNNGarden (http://www.dnngarden.com/) has a pretty good menu that is flexible and easy to use. Even though you're using images as the parent items, It still shouldn't be too difficult to achieve the exact same effect. (Personally, I would just use CSS3 text shadow but that's me).

Hope that helps,

Aaron

Thanks for the tip Aaron. I will give both navigation menu modules a shot and see if I can make it work. If I have have any questions I will be back for help.

I mostly work with Wordpress for CMS stuff, so it's taking me a while to wrap my head around everything in DNN.
