I'm not sure what happened to my AD provider but I have a test site that was not accessed for about a day and when I tried to load the home page I couldn't and the error was occuring on the WindowsSignon file.  I eventually got the home page to load and checked the event viewer and this is what it said:

I'm not even sure if I can duplicate this error, but just wanted to post it as an FYI.

Correction...I was able to duplicate this issue.  I cleared my temporary files and cookies and tried to revisit the page.  The application log on the server says this:
