I'm moving a website from GoDaddy to my DNN host I prefer.  I've created my child portal and used FTP to upload all the files.  As predicted, I'm receiving the runtime error.  I don't know which files and what lines to adjust to rematch the databases.  Can somebody give me step by step instructions?  In the future, I'll most likely consolidate many DNN sites under one hosting account so this will be EXTREMELY helpful to me.

Thanks a million!

Hi Dan,

Back up your DotNetNuke directory and database. On the new computer  create a new database (SQL Server) and then restore from backup. If you are using SQL Server Express probably the DataBase is within the DotNetNuke directory, in both cases update information (connectionStrings) in the web.config file that is in the root directory.

Within the code, how do I recognize the connections string and what do I update it with?

Come on, gang.  Everybody makes this sound like such a simple operation but I AM NOT A PROGRAMMER.  I brag on how easy DNN is to configure and deploy but these deeper issues kill me.  I would appreciate (and even pay for!) explicit illustrated instructions on making these changes.

I'm trying to move www.dcwolff.com/default to www.veritasnewmedia.com/dcwolff to get the site away from GoDaddy.  I'll then move the site from child to parent.  Obviously, I shouldn't just post that code here but I would REALLY appreciate if I could enlist some help via email where I provide those files.

Dan,

The issues you up against are not specific to DotNetNuke.  These are issues of  supporting an operational environent - system's management.  Typically has nothing to with programming.  It is what the programmer must work with.

The connection string mentioned about is the "magic string" that enforms the database  where to locate the database files.  In the Web.Config, which is located in the root of your DotNetNuke Instance files (same place you will find your Default.aspx), search for the term "connectionstring".  You should find a string detailing where your database was located at GoDaddy.    You will need to update this information from your new environment.  If you are unsure of what this should be, contact the support desk of your new host supplier.   For what a connection string should look like, see www.connectionstrings.com for help.

Hope this helps
Paul.
