I understand that you need to add the IIS role. My question is, during the installation of IIS, there are a couple of dozen role services that you can select. Are any of these role services needed in order for DNN to function properly or do you just perform a default installation of IIS? The role services you can choose from are listed below and I marked the ones that are selected by default. I was hoping there was some documentation that covered this. Everything I have read assumed that IIS was already installed. The scenario I am talking about is, I just installed a new server operating system (Server 2008 R2) which does not have IIS installed initially. I know I need to install IIS but does DNN require any of the role services below other than the defaults? Once I have IIS properly installed, there is pretty good documentation on what you need to do from there. I'll probably be fine after I get past this step.

easiest option is using Microsoft web platform installer (www.microsoft.com/web), which will select proper IIS extensions for you
