The reason the UL option is not in the documentation is that it is not supported in HTML skins.
I was waiting for HTML skin support (I don't develop NAV Mmenu), but that has not changed.
I'll add it in the next version of the documentation.

Ralph, Thanks for the blog post, only it still doesn't help me with putting an image in front of the menu icons. I tried setting the CSS to list-style-image:url(images/orangearrow.jpg); but it didn't work. any thoughts?

Kristine,

I would suggest putting the image as a background image with no repeat for the list items on the main menu, then, add a padding-left to push the text over beside the image.
