Thanks for your suggestion - will try and report back.  Currently using another domain's SMTP server and all is working perfectly.  This other domain is on the same physical server and managed under the same Plesk container.  But it is a cludge and it would be good to sort out the true reason for the failure.

I know it is a SMTP server configuration issue, and not a DNN issue.  The different to a default email client e.g. is that you send emails also from other email addresses as you logged in.  Most SMTP servers restrict this, due security tasks.  But for relaying from a website it needed then a manuel configuration change on the secutity settings.

Ther could be a way to add a Sender header on coding, but this is not best practice and most of the sendet mails are going graylisted or on the Junk folder.  So changing the SMTP server security settings are the best practice.

I'm having the exact same problem' as you'v descriebed.
