Help! – As more of a sales marketing sort of fella, with limited web knowledge - I am now about to start an IT dept – how do I limit and or control access for web development on my site.

·         As a website owner do you give the web developer the host login details?

·         And for data uploading, how would you limit access to certain areas on the site?

Any help on this issue will be greatly appreciated

The website is www.expatoasis.com

Regards Rory

Developers do not need access to your side, if they create module packages, you install yourself on your site - but you should never encounter an error, he can't reproduce in his dev env and you never can be sure, they don't include a backdoor. Anyone with access to the server has access to all content of your side - period. My advice: If you have limited knowledge about IT, look for an admin you can trust and hand over control for your web - anything else will fail in the long term.

Dear Sebastian

Excuse my ignorance but if I ask this guy to create a new image or give a page a new facelift within an existing module, does he do this on my site with a password or does he do it externally and give me the data.

I have a situation where we have about 5 account managers who maintain accounts and bring new business in – the problem is uploading new data and maintaining a professional looking site – hence my trying to figure out how to hand this operation over to an IT pro – who has a presence in the office between  09h00 and 12h00.

Is it possible to have total control over this type of operation?

Thank you for your help

Regards Rory

Dear Sebastian

Don’t know if you can help me on this one – I purchased a product called SigmaPro Draconis about a year ago and to this day cannot install it – in fact I have given up as my web knowledge is very limited, also another  reason I need this IT person to take over the running of the website.

This is a bit of background on me trying to unload SigmaPro Draconis:

I have been trying, relentlessly, for the past month to install the SigmaProDraconis software on my website, regrettably without any success.

On initial inspection, when installing a new module (as detailed in the instruction manual) it seems to have installed, but after examining the installation report it reveals a conflict, I have attached a copy of the installation report for your examination. When I try to resolve the conflict I find that my website has crashed with the following error:-

"Unhandled Error - Error Details:- File error timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool. This may have occurred because all pooled connections were in use and max pool size was reached."

The only way to resolve this matter is to restore my website to its last backed up status. I have repeated this process untold times only to be face with the same error and same problem every time I reinstall the SigmaPro software.

As per your instruction manual I have examined the maxRequestLength which is set at a default value of 4096 (seems to be sufficient compared to library file size approx 1.80MB) and also the executionTimeout where the idle timeout is set to 110 minutes (also sufficient compared to the 110 seconds stipulated in the instruction manual).

To be perfectly honest I am absolutely puzzled. It is a program I feel I could benefit from and would in theory add dimension to my business, however, I am struggling to install it successfuly without it crashing my site and causing loss to my business. The downtime this program has caused to my webportal is beyond funny.

For the specific issue of SigmaPro Draconis you better check http://www.onyaktech.com/ for support.
As for the admin permissions you should know that you can grant limited permissions to certain modules (or even certain actions - I am not sure about Draconis though) and control the admins freedom to act.
Anyways, I would advice that you'll read about the permissions issues in DNN documentation or books since this is something basic to manage a site with the level of control you describe.
