I would like to know the best method how to set horizontal distance between modules placed in various panes. E.g. when I put one module in the left pane, one module in the content pane and then preview it, borders of the modules almost touch horizontally each other. I don't want to use some fixed-width containers - I like them autosizing, but I don't like them to be so close to each other...

that depends on two factors, one is the space out of the container and another is the space between panes (which are just cells: <TD> BTW). Play with those until you get what you want.

Do you know the truth when you hear it?

There are three ways off the top of my head I think you can manage this -

  • Cell Spacing or Padding in the Table that holds the panes
  • Padding in the CSS file of the panes in your page - eg. padding-left: 2px;
  • Padding in the containers can help push things out a bit as well.

It's my preference to use CSS - mainly because let's say you've got a few skins that run the site - front, sub, admin.. you want them to be kept all looking the same  - if you use the CSS method - you just need to change one file -

So look in your css files - and if you don't have a class associated to the pane you need to do that to get them to be picked up in the skin.
