Well I'm at whits end.  I've tried everything listed here and else where and I can't not get past the stage of specifying the database.  I've installed 4 DNN sites successfully and this 5th one is being stubborn.

Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server.  Only an integrated connection can generate a user instance.  The connection will be closed. [CLIENT: <local machine>]

DNN 5.05.01 SQL Express 2008 on Windows 2008 R2.  The 4 previous sites I've installed on this same server all work fine, but are slightly older versions of DNN.

I've checked permissions on the directory, created, deleted and recreated the database several times granting different security each time.  I've changed the app pool security and added new app pools and nothing works.  Been at this off and on for the past week and am frustrated as all he&*.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Dean

how does you connection string look like? you cannot use username/password and database.mdf, either use integrated security or an attached database.

I've followed the same procedure with the other 4 sites.  I get the warning that Auto has been disabled (though this is new on this site, I don't recall getting that the previous installs).  It passes the permission check and then I get the Configure Database Connection screen.  I select SQL Server 2005/2008 (Express) File, leave the default of .\SQLExpress (though I have changed to the server name as well) and have tried both integrated security and without and using the SQL account I created the database with.  I select run as db owner and get the same error.  I've even tried with all the defaults on the database screen and get the same error.

I'm not the greatest database guy or programmer.  I'm a network infrastructure guy and can build a LAN/WAN in my sleep, but this has been my kryptonite.

Sigh!
