I don't seem to be able to assign roles to users any more. I recently upgraded to 4.09.05 (but was initially able to still assign roles at that time), and my User Account module is 1.00.00. Is there some way to pin down and fix exactly what's wrong?
Here is the error I am getting:

I should mention that despite the scary error the Role was correctly assigned to the User. So I'd just like to understand how to fix the error please... Thanks, Bob

It appears that the error is occuring after the user had been added to the role and in the code involved with sending an email notification of the role change to the user. A quick look at the code indicates that the null reference may be caused by there being no default value for Preferred Local having been set in the user's profile. I would check the profile for the particular user and try adding a role to a different user to see if the issue is limited to this and only this user or to all users. As a work-around for now, I recall that in DNN 4.09.05 you should be able to uncheck the "Send Nofication" box when adding or modifying a user's roles to see if that prevents the problem from occuring.

Thanks Bill, that does look likely.

I find that the problem affects all users. However, if I go into "Manage Profile Properties" and simply do an "update" I can then add/remove roles for that user without errors.

My guess is that this field was not required in our original version of DNN, and some upgrade introduced the requirement but did not populate the field with a default, so that pre-existing accounts all have a null Default Locale until their profile is simply updated and the value set. Until that value is set, changes in Roles will generate this error.

I don't suppose there's anything I can do to populate the Default Locale for everyone? Our only choice is English anyway, since this is a local site.

Thanks again,
   Bob
