I solved the problem! Apparently SQL Server 2008 R2 isn't supported. I tried installing SQL Server 2008 Express and it worked fine without having to do anything!

hm, there should be no difference between SQL Server 2008 and 2008 R2. However, user Instances are only supported by Express Editions.

That's what I thought too, but I have both SQL Server 2008 Express and SQL Server 2008 R2 Express on my computer, and I haven't yet gotten DotNetNuke to work with R2, but it worked instantly without any hassles with 2008.

If you have any suggestions regarding how to get it to work with R2, I would appreciate it. For now, I'll just use 2008 Express.

If you have 2 SQL Server instances running you must have different instance names e.g.  localhost\SQLExpress and localhost\SQLExpressR2.  So if you want to install a new DNN instance using the 2nd SQL Server you have to referrence to the 2nd instance name.  Don't forget to check your IIS settings and physical permissions on your DNN folder.
