Thanks Gilles. I would have done that but before I saw your post this is what I did:

1) Restored the backup
2) Changed the site to run under ASP.NET 4.0
3) Removed the web.config fiile from "DotNetNuke_Community_05.06.00_Install" and used that to upgrade the site.
4) i got the same error as before, but this time the site stayed running
5) Upgraded to 05.06.01 and there were no errors

I doub't that my experience will help others, other than perhaps trying to run the site under ASP.NET 4

Hi Michael,

I have seen your post in the Team Forum, I will download your backup and try my simple workaround. May be it could help others.

We (team members) are Humans offering their knowledge, their work and their spare time FOR FREE to benefit the community. It would be so particularly appreciated that your messages begin with "Hello" and end with "Thank you" or any other form of politeness. Ask yourself what your reaction would be, if you were approached by me (a total stranger) on the street to ask you something without saying "Hello" nor "Thank you"? After several years of services dedicated to the community, I begin to be tired to read requests without any form of politeness.

I have just downloaded your backup now and have found a template file inside ...\Portals\0\Templates\Default_old.page.template! Simply delete this file before upgrade should correct this problem. I will try this nigth and keep your informed tomorrow.

Hi Michael,

I tried to restore your db but your dnn instance use SQL Server 2008 R2 or above because I can't restore it on my SQL Server 2008. If you can provide me a backup compatible with my version I could try.
