First off, let me say that I am not a network guy... I'm a programmer.   :)

I have a working site that I want to move to a production server to allow users to start working with it.   The box is a 2008 R2 server, with IIS 7.5 and SQL Server 2008 R2... both are 64 bit.    I have worked out SQL connection string issues, now I keep getting the 401.3 - Unauthorized error.

The app is using the DefaultAppPool, set to Integrated pipeline and .NET 2.0.    The Identity is set to "ApplicationPoolIdentity"    The User "DefaultAppPool" (Windows doesn't let me add the name ApplicationPoolIdentity) has full control of the directory that holds the website.    I have also tried using "Local Service" and gave that user full rights to the website directory... but I still get the 401.3 error.

It has to be something simple I'm missing... just not sure what.

Any clues?   Ideas?   Snide remarks?   lol

Thanks in advance,
Lou

if you are going to continue using App Pool identity, please read: http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/EntryId/2420/Windows-7-Windows-2008-R2-cross-application-pool-isolation.aspx

Hey, I am making progress!     The problem _was_ in the SQL Database, I did not have the user rights set properly after I restored it to the production server.    The page it was having problems rendering was the installl/UnderConstruction page, which was what lead me back to looking at the SQL data.

Now I'm getting the pages to render... but ALL the graphics are displaying as broken links with the red X.   No skins, no menus, no jpgs,.. etc.    The Application pool is set to defaultAppPool, and that user has full rights from the root wesite directory down as does the IIS User account.   It is as if the DefaultAppPool user doesn't have rights to the directories below the root of the website... but  it does.

the graphics are all called from the portals/0/ directory - should be no problem as far as I can see - but they won't render.   This happens when I hit the website on the server or another machine on the domain.   I  am still accessing the site via an IP address, would that make a difference?  Using (localhost on the server has the same issue.

Still plugging away on it... any tips/tricks appreciated.
Lou

did you modify relative server address, e.g. by moving from a virtual directory to the root of a web site? and did you check IIS permissions for unauthenticated web users, who need read access to all image folders?

Please forgive me if this seems overly simplistic, a lot of this is new territory for me.  :)

My development environment is XP and is running fine.  Due to limitations in IIS in XP there wasn't anything I do do with DNS or the Hosts file to make things easier... the url to my site http://localhost/IconIntranet/Default...    I copied all of this code to am similarly named folder on the new server.

The Server is 2008 server R2.    All of the SQL issues are ironed out and the site is now running - sort of; all graphics are displaying as broken.    The links at the bottom of the page (in text mode) are working, but like the default page all graphics are broken on them.   The Login and Register links do nothing.

So it appears my problem is two-fold...

1 -  Get the graphics to display properly.   It appears to be a a rights issue, although the rights on the iconinranet folder for the AppPool user are inheritied by the folders below.  They don't display on the server (using localhost) nor will they display on a client (using the IP address of the server)

2 -  Change hosts/dns/whatever needs changing to be able to access the set via a name (iconintranet).   This _may_ be beyond the scope of this forum, but not being a network admin all of this is a bit foregn to me and I have no idea where to turn.  The info I am finding deals with outside providers, everything I need to do is inside our own network.

Any direction others could point me to would be helpful and appreciated.

Lou
