Another approach may also be possible. Is it possible to change the passwordFormat of the membership provider?

The error SharePoint gives me when I try to log in suggests "do not use an auto-generated machineKey' OR 'change the passwordFormat value to something other than 'Encrypt''. This suggests to me that a value of 'Hashed' or 'Clear' may work.

So can I change the passwordFormat in the web.config and expect DNN to behave appropriately?

cheers

You can change the password format but the values already in the db will be in the wrong format so current users (including host) wont be able to log in.

Mission accomplished!!! :-)

The easy solution was to change the passwordFormat in the membership provider to 'Clear'.

Thanks for your input guys.

If any-one else is interested in this respond here and I'll write up the full process.

Cheers

Thanks for your comment Robert.
You are correct, but as I was in a position that allowed me to start from scratch, this was not a problem.

I did a re-install of DNN using the new setting.

cheers
