Store users,

I recommended to Gilles and Benoît that wording changes be made so that the store is more "service and virtual product friendly".  For example, the word "Manufacturer" is more typically associated with hard goods whereas the word "Supplier" is a more service and virtual product friendly. Equally, changing "Model Number" to "Item Number" and "Model Name" to "Item Name" would make the store more product neutral.

I received the following reply from Benoît:

Benoît writes:
"Donald, do you think that it would be useful to change to wording in the standard resource files that are shipped with Store, without changing the names in the database (which is a breaking change for those who wrote custom procedures, etc).

Or would it just add to much confusion to have field labels different than database labels? (note that this is the case in other languages anyway so the confusion would mainly be for english users)

...you might open a new thread in this forum for discussion about these proposed change with other english speakers

With Benoît's comments in mind, do others have an opinion on the best approach to make the store more service product and virtual product friendly?

1. Do you think that it would be useful to change to wording in the standard resource files that are shipped with Store, without changing the names in the database (which is a breaking change for those who wrote custom procedures, etc)?

2. Or would it just add to much confusion to have field labels different than database labels? (note that this is the case in other languages anyway so the confusion would mainly be for english users).

3.  My thinking is that the following changes should to be made.  What is your opinion?

Original                Changed To
Manufacturer       Supplier
Model Name       Item Name
Model Number   Item Number

Please let us know your opinion.  Thanks.

Don

Although I don't (yet) use the store module I would agree with the changes. Half of the e-commerce I get involved with is either services or software and the changes suggested are much more neutral and acceptable to any product, software, IP based item, or service.

Shouldn't all labels be resource driven anyhow?

As much as possible, but not all admins have resources access depending on their privileges and their hoster. Moreover, it is better go give the database field a name that matches the entity property and the usual resource name, so the code is easier to understand.

By nature a core module should be as general and cover a range of use cases as wide as possible, so it makes sense to use generic terms rather than specific.

Hi Brian,

All core modules have to follow some rules, one of them is to be able to localize the module. Of course, you can change any string and label using the DotNetNuke Language Editor. The subject here is to adopt a more 'classic' wording.

We (team members) are Humans offering their knowledge, their work and their spare time FOR FREE to benefit the community. It would be so particularly appreciated that your messages begin with "Hello" and end with "Thank you" or any other form of politeness. Ask yourself what your reaction would be, if you were approached by me (a total stranger) on the street to ask you something without saying "Hello" nor "Thank you"? After several years of services dedicated to the community, I begin to be tired to read requests without any form of politeness.
