We have a DNN install (4.08) and recently converted to MS SQL Server 2008. We have developed custom modules in C# accessing a non-DNN Sql Server DB. This DB name was changed to a new name containing a hyphen.

We now are having problems connecting to the DB. We get a sql connection timeout issue. The DotNetNuke DB is on the same Sql2008 server and we are using the same connection string format - here is the connection string definition:

<add name="OurDB" connectionString="Server=<ip address>;Database=ourdbnamewith-dash;uid=dbuser;pwd=ourpassword;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>

We have tried the dbname with and without surrounding brackets. Permissions should not be an issue as we have tested using the sa login as well.

Can anyone provide insight into why this is not working? It was working without any issues on a previous Sql2005 instance with a db name without a hyphen. Much appreciated.

You should never use a dash (or any other special character) in a database, table or column name. Although technically possible the results are always mixed. Your best bet is to rename the database. Let me know if you have any questions.
