Yes, but you're writing those ten lines  from the top of the learning curve.  What would I have to go through to understand each of those lines and why  there aren't  eleven or nine lines?  And those lines are still along way from implementing the form input I want, with logic on the display.  I've been working with the designer of a forms module available at Snowcovered for over a month now, with me uncovering and him fixing bugs - with no hope of finally putting in any logic on the display.  And this is in the released version!  So you're probably not going to convince me that DNN modules are "easy."

I'm just not sure I see the wisdom, right now,  of adding and learning all these layers of complexity in order to play in a DNN environment, to end up with something that is less capable than a simple HTML/PHP implementation. Plus, if I use third party DNN modules, the quality of my project depends on what is probably one guy working out of a spare bedroom, who I know nothing about, while the DNN created modules seem to only be supported until a third party picks up  the idea and runs with it, and then the DNN team disbands.

I've put a lot of effort into learning DNN and I've created and sold some DNN sites, but today I'm not so happy with it all.

Not sure what your exact point is at this stage?

DNN is based around  the asp.net development methodology - it is capable of delivering any look, layout or implementation that pretty much anyone could ever visualize withing the html space.

What you have been suggesting you are wanting to see is pretty much doable with very simple and standard asp.net linq database access and a couple of drag and drop standard asp.net grid view / form view components.  Which is how it should be implemented - as opposed to trying to force other 3rd party components to do your bidding when it is not something they were designed to do.

Many hundreds of thousands of web site developers go down this path on a daily basis ... but to do so ... like anything you need to learn the rules of the game - in dnn's case its the asp.net development framework.  And I must say if you are willing to explore that learning process you open up a myriad of new development opportunities.

I guess it really comes down to what you want out of a development platform and its toolset.  If you want all the features that DNN provides in terms of CMS friendly web sites - and would like to extend it further then you need to learn how to CODE for its platform.

Otherwise, no one is holding a gun to your head, and forcing you to use this platfom. There are any number of other CMS systems out there, joomla, phpnuke, wordpress just to name a few ... BUT with each comes a learn curve if you want to develop modules within that work and integrate with their design core.

You have a couple of options, if you want do develop custom modules for DNN, learn about how to code for asp.net.  Otherwise, check out a php based cms if thats the platform you want to learn to code for.

Alternatively, if you dont want to learn to code but still want to go down the dnn path consider hiring an asp.net developer to build your custom modules for you - with source code provided so that you are future safe.  Down this route - you wind up with modules that do exactly what you want - without all the overhead that an off the shelf 3rd party form builder thats being kludged to kind of meet your need brings to the table.

Happy to talk to you about the later if you want a custom designed module that does exactly what your specification requires - wtatters@live.com.au

there are a couple of configurable modules, e.g. SGSV from tressleworks.ca, which might be used to retrieve and edit custom sql.
