Having created the blank database using SSMSE and having set up SQL Authentication for that database you do not want to move the database file (mdf) into the site's App_Data folder. Leave the database file where it is!

Instead, when setting up the connection information in the DotNetNuke Install Wizard you must:

1. Set the Select Database radio button to "SQL Server 2005/2008 Database" NOT to "SQL Server 2005/2008 (Express) File". Even though you have SQL Express as your database server, in this case you will be treating it like the non-Express edition and not using the AttachDBFilename option.

2. With the above selection you will be able to enter the database name (DNN I'm guessing) that you created in SSMSE.

3. Make sure that Integrated Security is not checked

4. Enter the UserID (DNNUser) and Password

5. Make sure that run as db Owner is checked.

The benefit of having created a blank database as opposed to using the database file approach is to be able to easily examine and if necessary create additional database tables, proceedures, etc. from outside of DotNetNuke and easily create a database backup that will be necessary when migrating the site from its local install to a shared hosting provider or other live server.

It took longer to think about it, but the result was the same. Here is my current connection strings and the screen is below that.

    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005/2008 -->
    <add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Server=(local);Database=DNN;uid=DNNUser;pwd=dnnuser;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

    <!-- Connection String for SQL Server 2005/2008 - kept for backwards compatability - legacy modules -->
    <add key="SiteSqlServer" value="Server=(local);Database=DNN;uid=DNNUser;pwd=dnnuser;" />

Configure Database Connection

You can configure the database settings used by DotNetNuke on this page. If you are installing DotNetNuke in a "Hosting Account" your hosting provider should have provided you with the information.

There are two options for SQL Server 2005/2008. SQLServer 2005 and SQL Server 2008 support the use of Database Files. In most situations you should choose the Database option, but if you are using SQL Server 2005/2008 Express then you should use the File option.

Select Database:

Server: Enter the Name or IP Address of the computer where the Database is located. (if using Oracle enter the Data Source (SID))
Database: Enter the Database name
Integrated Security: Check this if you are using SQL Server's Integrated Security, which means you will be using your Windows account to access SQL Server. If you are using SQL Server Express then you will most likely need to check this option. If you have been given a UserId/Password to access your Database, leave this unchecked, and provide the UserId/Password combination.
User ID: Enter the UserID for the Database
Password: Enter the Password for the Database
Run as db Owner: Check this if you are running the database as Database Owner - if left unchecked you will be running as the User ID specified
Object Qualifier: Enter an optional "prefix" to use for all your database objects - this helps ensure that there are no object name clashes.
