Created c:\inetpub\centreDnn folder on my Win2008 Standard
Downloaded and extraced DNN561+SuperUserManual.zip to location above

Granted the following permission to location above

Created an App Pool in IIS as follows

Created Site in IIS as with the following basic settings:

And I have two concerns
1)results when I click "Test Settings"

2) the following when I piont my browser to the 561 install URL:

the error above makes reference to a username but never explicitly names the username.

Can anyone give me some direction as to how to proceed?

Another note: I have a production 04.08.02 DNN instance running on this server with no problems. I did a "Test Settings" on this server and I get the same "cannot verify access to path" message as stated above - so I'm reluctant to think that this message is related to the 561 install failing.

if youre using 2008 r2 you use a different user, see http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/EntryId/2420/Windows-7-Windows-2008-R2-cross-application-pool-isolation.aspx

Thanks Cathal, but unfortunately I'm not using R2.  The appPoolIdentity account doesn't exist (chosen off list or manually keyed in) on my first generation 2008 server.

Any other ideas?

Now I'm pissed.  I go to my hypervisor and create a fresh install of Win2008 R2 and follow Cathal's advice, this time I am able to see the AppPool user and create ACL for it to the physical app folder.  I leave the appPool settings as Integrated and identity is set to ApplicationPoolIdentity rather than Network Service.  Stankin DNN won't install - it's like AbRipperX - I hate it...but I love it.

I can't believe I'm the only soul on the planet to come accross this on two separate machines.

If anyone could grant me direction I'd be much obliged.

you could try setting the app pool to network service and see if that works - i'm not sure how hypervisor works but i've had issues with cloned instances before (with other products) where local users were incorrect (i.e they had wrong SSID's). Please note it's also a good idea to try the webPI program to install dotnetnuke as it checks and validates permissions - http://www.microsoft.com/web/downloads/platform.aspx
