I have seen advertising on this site, and have seen other people mention using www.webhost4life.com.

Beware!  I have an account with them.  Recently I installed DNN, and a DNN based ecommerce package.  Today I decided I wanted to look at my database, so I logged in as usual, and connected to my databse.

OMG! I can see every database on the entire server, who owns them, AND I HAVE PERMISSION TO EDIT OR DELETE OTHER PEOPLE'S DATABASES!

My site will be moved by tomorrow.  I guess this is an extreme example of "you get what you pay for"!

I too had some security issues just in the last few weeks. I had 2 accounts, both semi-dedicated, besides the security issues they where not living up to thier contract of a max number of users per server (6). I was satisfied with thier servers and service for more than 2 years, however when I found the first glaring security issue they literally had no timely response or reason for this oversite. I won't disclose the issue(s) to protect those still on those servers.

To those still using their service, I would audit your account often and closely.

Back a couple of months ago, I had a personal account with them and could see all of the other databases on their db server through Enterprise Manager ...it took FOREVER to load all of them over the internet, but I couldn't open them (I tried just for fun), edit them, or delete them.  I'm fairly sure you don't have near the permissions you think you do, although being able to get the owner account name is bad enough in its own right ...then again, I could be wrong and something has changed since I've been a customer.

I'm not defending W4L, but they advertise 'semi-dedicated' servers with a maximum of (10) accounts, not (6).

W4L is not the worst host out there, trust me ...but they could probably do a lot of things better.

Regardless of what WH4L offers now as far as semi-dedicated servers, my contract was 6 users per server. And I'm a DBA by trade, I think I can find my way around an MS SQL Server enough to know what my permission levels are in regards to other accounts objects.

Your probably right, they [WH4L] may very well not be the worst host out there, but people should be aware of practices that may not fit their needs.

I'd like to nominate Tactical Systems for the "worst host out there" award.  I closed my account well over two years ago due to slow speed and a total lack of support, but I still get three emails a month from them:  Hosting Invoice, Hosting Overdue Notice and Hosting Suspention Notice (their spelling).  Each month, I reply three times telling them that my account is closed. They think I owe them around $650.00 now. Phone calls and letters don't help either.

Ask others and shop around before you secure hosting or any other service over the internet.
