I have not been able to find a solution to a simple problem.  I put up posts and gotten no reponse from the community.

My problem is when a user registers I get an error.

Error An error has occurred.

Error: User Registration is currently unavailable.

I dont know why it does this because the user then can login right after the error.  I have a couple other installations of DNN and I get the same problem on all of them. So i know it is something to do with smtp server.  I know I have proper smtp settings and emails were sent successfully when doing the SMTP test while in the settings page, but when DNN tries to send an email during resistration, it fails.

Does anyone know what is going on?  I have seen a couple posts that this error has happened to other people and they think it has to do with the host email has to be the same as the smtp email?  I do not get any emails from the site other than the test email, this tells me I am on the right path.

Please help, I need to produce results for my clients and this is the only thing holding me back.  I was able to design some beutiful content and I hate to throw it all away and switch to a lesser CMS.

Thank you to anyone who responds to me this time, I will give you more information to help me with this.

Much appreciated,

Lance

I know from experience that a successful SMTP server test does not mean it will necessarily work in practice. Please post your SMTP settings (masking your domain name).

I figured out a solution to the problem!  I am going to lst what I did here for others who get this issue in the future.  I found very, very little help on this in the forums and I hope this will help someone who is getting the error after a new registration.

First thing I need to mention is that I am being hosted by GoDaddy, and the regular smtp setting doesn't work.  Normally you would use smtpout.secureserver.net  but I had to use relay-hosting.secureserver.net

Next, click "normal" and enter the email address you have for your hosting plan. This email address HAS to match what is set as your superuser email.

Then unclick ssl.

I was able to send an email successfully. But that wasnt the original problem, I still was getting the error.  The way I was able to fix it was by going to my superuser profile and enter the SAME EMAIL ADDRESS as the smtp email.  I also went to the admin account and used the same email address for that one too.

I'm not user which one fixed the problem, but since I am admin and host I am going to leave it that way.

I reproduced the same results on my other installations of DNN.  I am relieved that I am able to stay with DNN because i think it is the best CMS out there.

Have you checked Admin > Event Log for additional details on that exception?

Here is one of the exceptions it threw. Thank you for reminding me about the event log!

System.Net.Mail.SmtpException: Server does not support secure connections. at System.Net.Mail.SmtpConnection.GetConnection(String host, Int32 port) at System.Net.Mail.SmtpTransport.GetConnection(String host, Int32 port) at System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient.GetConnection() at System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient.Send(MailMessage message) at DotNetNuke.Services.Mail.Mail.SendMail(String MailFrom, String MailTo, String Cc, String Bcc, String ReplyTo, MailPriority Priority, String Subject, MailFormat BodyFormat, Encoding BodyEncoding, String Body, List`1 Attachments, String SMTPServer, String SMTPAuthentication, String SMTPUsername, String SMTPPassword, Boolean SMTPEnableSSL)

it appears it had something to do with the ssl option, but even when i removed the option, I still get the error.  So it was a combination of the ssl and the emails not being the same? Dont know yet, I got it working though, now I will have the time to go through the log with a fine tooth keyboard =]
