Ok - im a little confused by some of the changes in the login and rego popup methodologies.

As is currently stands - if you select a custom login page or a custom rego page - the popup system is being turned off for that page.

The question is - HOW do we turn the functionality back on for these CUSTOM login and rego pages
 - they were working in the earlier beta's but now are not.

This is all starting to feel very messy and badly thought out to say the least.

We want to use the new popup functionality - but like many sites we use a custom rego page that better suits our client needs.

Hey Wes,
I completely understand how frustrating it can be to be working with something shiny and new, but then find out it doesn't quite work the way you want. Keep in mind that the Pop Up functionality is new and it is very difficult to expect all modules and skins to work perfectly within this new paradigm. Personally, for my own site and modules, I would prefer that everything appeared the same after I performed an upgrade. If I had a custom registration module that was designed for a specific a page, I would be a little upset if the upgrade forced it into a popup that didn't fit my form properly.

There have been many changes throughout the CTP's, Beta's and the RC. I can safely say that all of these changes were made based upon overall user feedback and only after considerable thought and consideration. I know there has also been other posts about how to implement popups along with ideas for future enhancements. One thing is for certain, users like this feature and we certainly have potential to make it even better.

I know I haven't spoken at all to the actual issue you are reporting. I did some basic testing and it looks like the behavior is exactly what you described. I'm fairly certain that this is the intended behavior in order to maintain backwards compatibility. this sounds like a good feature request either for the Portal settings area where you define the custom page or for the skin object that actually renders those links on the page.

Thanks,
Will

Hey Will,

Dont get me wrong I like where the popup functionality is going . . . just trying to get my head around changes from betas to rc etc.

Have a new site which we hope to take live not long after 6.0 gets released and in that chasing tail mode a bit which is always fun.

What is really needed badly is better ways to control the functionality.

1. settings on portal for login and rego would be a start

or better still

2. All dnn skin objects should be able to turn the functionality on or off - even if its off by default.
Login, Rego, Terms, Privacy etc should all have this functionality in the core.

Ive made changes to test this already in the core source code and the functionality works well.

3. The MENU system needs to have the same capability - basically a option on each tab that says - open as popup.
its actually surprisingly easy to add the functionality with the fantastic new @razor support for the new menu system.
At the moment its working with a set of name validations on my test system - but should be implemented into the core.
with this in place then the LINKS module would also be a great contender for the same functions.

4. And just to complete the set - to allow for full functionality - the HTML editor provider should also have the option to define a link as a popup.

by the way - that's basically the wish list for my client . . . and will be running somehow at launch.

Cheers

Westa

Hi Wes,

Though Will hit everything right on the button, I'll just add some insight to this.

The login popup was forced in early CTP's and Betas, but upon doing so, we received feedback that existing custom login pages that were being forced in the popup were simply unusable. We then decided to take the approach of only popping up the default login and registration pages, ensuring we don't break existing custom login and registration pages.

Simply put, the popups currently only work for the default login and default registration pages.

Having said that, I definitely like your suggestion of being able to define a popup setting for the custom login and registration pages. The best thing to do is to log it in Gemini and we'll take it from there.

Best of luck with your new client,

-- vince.
