We are using the default user module of DNN and we are having a problem with how long it takes for people to register.

The first thing is that the list of questions is too long.  I asked my developer to remove any profile questions from the registration form but there are still a lot of questions.  My developer said we need all the fields for the database.  Some websites I go to just ask for an email address and password but we have user name, display name, first name, last name, email address and password twice. Do we really need all of these questions?

The other thing is the length of time for the information to be saved.  I timed it at 37 seconds  for the thing spinning around to stop.  What is it doing for 37 seconds?  Potential users will think it is frozen and close the web site.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Craig

thats definately not normal - registration here on dotnetnuke.com only takes 1-2 seconds typically.

You can control what's asked via the user settings - log in as host and go to admin->user accounts, click on user settings and scroll down change the user account settings. You can also click on 'manage profile properties' on the user accounts page and uncheck the required and visible checkboxs to remove unneeded profile properties.

As for the time taken, id recommend checking the admin->event viewer to see if any errors are logged, and perhaps running a sql profiler trace to see what is taking all the time. If you're running dnn 6 or above, I'd recommend enabling log4net for ALL to ee if that offers any insight http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/W...

If rego is taking a long time - it is most likely because you have not setup your email server settings correctly in Host Settings module

The rego module attempts to send an email to the new user and also an email to the administrator - with the details of the new user.

If the email server settings are not correct - the rego module with hang until the send mail action times out - which can be up to 15 seconds and since the send is synchronous - after the first send to the user times out - the second send to the admin will also need to time out.

So I would look at getting your email settings sorted out before anything else - dnn uses the send mail system for a number of notifications - so it needs to be working correctly.

As for the fields in the default rego for - yes these are all mandatory if you are using the dnn core rego module and membership provider.

There are some custom 3rd party modules on www.snowcovered.com that provide other options - such as username = email , firstname = email -  and single password entry - though this is always asking for problems.

Mind though others also add additional questions such as captcha field protection and secret question and answers.
