Hi and thanks very much to both of you for the help.
I tried this on two sites, one is version 5.4.4. and the other is 6.0.1
Scott's method worked under both versions but I got different results using Sebastian's method.
Under 5.4.4, everything works fine. An image is displayed and when clicked, a new browser window pops up and shows the PDF file. If we right-click and select Save Target As, that works fine too.
Under 6.0.1, the image is not displayed. Instead, a string of text shows up like this:
http://10.0.0.8:8085/Portals/0/Absorp... (this is one a development site)
The functionality all works the same as in 5.4.4, but the image doesn't show up. When I switch to text mode in the editor, here is what shows up:
<a href="/Portals/0/Absorption%20Corp%20Carefresh%20Bedding.pdf" target="_blank">http://10.0.0.8:8085/Portals/0/Absorption%20Corp%20Carefresh%20Bedding.pdf</a>
No sign of the image. Even though I added the image and then used the Hyperlink Manager on the toolbar just like in 5.4.4, in 6.0.1, the image disappears once I click Save out of the Hyperlink Manager.
I would prefer to do this via the rich text editor using Image Manager and Hyperlink Manager, so hopefully this is a temporary bug in 6.x. If anyone has any insight on this, please let me know.
Note to Sebastian: Thanks for suggesting the use of the other modules. I considered the Documents module before, but it doesn't allow me to display an image for each file. I'm not sure if either of the other two modules allow for an image or not. I'd have to test them out.
At least now, we can get to work in 5.4.4 while we work out the kinks in 6.0.1
Thanks again to both of you for all of your help. I really appreciate it.
