Hello,

I would like to have the users of our site download and open PDF files that are linked to images. So basically I would like to place an image on the site and when clicked, a new window opens displaying the PDF file, or the user can right-click the image, and use the Save Target As command to save the file on their computer.

I've tried using the HTML module and adding an image, but I can't seem to make this work via the link properties of the image. I can set the target to a new window, but I can't seem to be able to link the image to a PDF file that has been loaded to the site.

An example of the exact funtionality we need is here on the DNN site forf the installation instructions. It can be found at the following link towards the bottom of the page:

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi Eli ~

No problem.  That's just an anchor tag, wrapping an image tag.  The image tag displays the picture but the anchor tag controls the action of the link that is wrapped around it.  Just format the anchor tag to have your document as the href value and open in a new window.  That would look something like this:

<a target="_blank" href="http://www.yoursite.com/yourfile.pdf"><img alt="" height="xxx" width="xxx" src="/yourimage.jpg" /></a>

Cheers.

to use the rich text editor, you may insert an image with border 0. Next s elect the image and click "add link" in the toolbar to add a link to it. If you want to provide a list of downlioads, you may prefer using documents, link or FormAndList module for this purpose.

Hi and thanks very much to both of you for the help.

I tried this on two sites, one is version 5.4.4. and the other is 6.0.1

Scott's method worked under both versions but I got different results using Sebastian's method.

Under 5.4.4, everything works fine. An image is displayed and when clicked, a new browser window pops up and shows the PDF file. If we right-click and select Save Target As, that works fine too.

Under 6.0.1, the image is not displayed. Instead, a string of text shows up like this:

http://10.0.0.8:8085/Portals/0/Absorp... (this is one a development site)

The functionality all works the same as in 5.4.4, but the image doesn't show up. When I switch to text mode in the editor, here is what shows up:

<a href="/Portals/0/Absorption%20Corp%20Carefresh%20Bedding.pdf" target="_blank">http://10.0.0.8:8085/Portals/0/Absorption%20Corp%20Carefresh%20Bedding.pdf</a>

No sign of the image. Even though I added the image and then used the Hyperlink Manager on the toolbar just like in 5.4.4, in 6.0.1, the image disappears once I click Save out of the Hyperlink Manager.

I would prefer to do this via the rich text editor using Image Manager and Hyperlink Manager, so hopefully this is a temporary bug in 6.x. If anyone has any insight on this, please let me know.

Note to Sebastian: Thanks for suggesting the use of the other modules. I considered the Documents module before, but it doesn't allow me to display an image for each file. I'm not sure if either of the other two modules allow for an image or not. I'd have to test them out.

At least now, we can get to work in 5.4.4 while we work out the kinks in 6.0.1

Thanks again to both of you for all of your help. I really appreciate it.

-Eli
