Hello

I had dotnet nuke included with the hosting package at godaddy.com so as I thought it would be a straight forward process of setting up a basic site with this software. I registered, downloaded all the required files and now I see I require visual studio 2005 as per the installation instructions for the version 4.

I get the impression this software is not quite that straight forward as applying changes to a template and posting it online! How, why & what is visual studio required for and is this process something like a wysiwyg type of program suitable for novices that have only used basic html and front page for posting websites?

So, Is there anybody that can keep it simple and tell me if I can set up a website with dotnuke and without the visual studio. I dont have the $100 whatever is cost for this software just to set up a basic site. Can Frontpage be used to edit the templates  and then using same to publish?

If Im wasting my time ...please ...just say so... Shot!

You only need Visual Studio if you want to work with the source code and modify DotNetNuke. Otherwise you can use the install version and never use Visual Studio.

FWIW, Visual Studio is the top of the line development environment for .NET. There is also an express edition that is available for free for novices at

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/default.aspx

That version will be ideal for you.

Thx for afvice Dwayne! so what you saying is that since I only want to install a website I actually dont need visual studio!

Then that would make the starter kit redundant as it is a .vsi file. Looking in the Install file, there is no .exe file and the templates are of the dnn logo and again I find myself wondering what the point of providing this as a supposed easy website that can be installed in a matter of minutes! Any suggestions how to put this lot together in 2 or 3 steps?

Is there a simple method of applying personal data to this dotnet template and uploading it to godaddy.com.

thx

You only need DotNetNuke Install to get your site up and running. In a nutshell...

  1. Edit permisions to allow full control to your virtual folder.
  2. Copy all the files in Install into your virtual folder.
  3. Setup the user login and the database in SQL Server/Express
  4. Edit web.config to use these SQL setttings.
  5. Browse to the root of your virutal folder and DotNetNuke should install itself.

The other 3 downloadable files are for development (Source and Starter Kit) and upgrades (Upgrade).
