My web site www.AgingSafely.com relies on patent portals. When I upgraded from DNN 4.8.3 to DNN 5.6.3 I had to have DNNhelp fix-up several errors with portals that were missed during thye DNN 5.0 upgrade process. Afterward both of us tested several times that we could export a template and create a new parent portal from that template.

This week when I went to create a new parent portal the server hung each time I tried and I wound up with a partially created portal.  I filed a ticket with support at my hosting company PowerDNN and there response was:
"The portal creation process from a template has known bugs which does cause it to time out almost every time. Unfortunately it is also not a function of DNN that we are able to offer support with because of the issues that this process does have."

Re-installing the backup on my localhost also seemed to have the same issue.

Does anyone know more about this, or have a solution / work-around?

are you creating just the template or the template with included data - if you include data and there is a lot of it it is possible that during creation a hang will occur (as the dynamically generated file overflows the amount of RAM the hosting provider has provided). As for there being issues in templates, typically these manifest on import (e.g. the import has a problem with data from an exported template) and not on template creation.

I am "including content" but there isn't much content, just3 pages a couple modules per page with no real content.  I'll try re-saving the template without content.

BTW is there a way to create a parent portal without using a template?

sure, when you create a a portal under host->portals there is a drop-down to select the template, there should be an option for none.

Cathal,

since creating a portal with the same content and template worked repeatedly in Oct, I assume that Power DNN must have changed "amount of RAM the hosting provider has provided".  Do you know exactly what parameter that would be so that ask them to restore it to its previous value.
