I started out by upgrading my DNN install from 6.0.1 to 6.1.2.  (No, I was lazy and didn't back up the site files.)  This installation hung, so I went installed 6.0.1 back on top of the other install.  I didn't realize it, but I had the 6.0.1 FULL install.  That overwrote my web.config file, etc.  I updated the Connection Strings in there as if the install were a new one and it still doesn't connect.

Please tell me that there is something that I can do to get this back up and running.

What other files do I need to edit to get running again?

Sorry to say but I don't think there is too much hope of recovery even if you had used the 6.0.1 upgrade rather than install package as it is not possible to "downgrade" versions.

Did you by any chance make a backup of the database prior to either the upgrade from 6.0.1 to 6.1.2 or prior to trying to "downgrade"?

If the site is remotely hosted have you checked with your hosting provider to see if a daily backup of the site files and database taken prior to the first upgrade attempt might still be available.

Do you have a backup of the old (6.0.1) web.config from which the machine keys can be obtained?

At what point in the failed upgrade attempt did the upgrade "hang"?

I sorta have the site back up and running now.  I created a local install on my laptop and processed the upgrade.  Once that was done, I uploaded the file back to the site.  Now, the only problem I have is that I cannot log in to any of my Portals.  I am assuming that DNN stores some password encryption information in the file system.

Is there any way to get back in?  Force password through the SQL Server?  Adjust some lines in a config file somewhere?

Thanks!!

SOLVED

I found this online somewhere else and made it work.

Declare @UserName NVarChar(30)
Declare @Password NVarChar(30)
Declare @Application NVarChar(255)
Declare @PasswordSalt NVarChar(128)

set @UserName = 'UserName'
set @Password = 'Password'
set @Application = 'DotNetNuke'

Set @PasswordSalt = (SELECT 1 PasswordSalt FROM aspnet_Membership WHERE UserID IN (SELECT UserID FROM aspnet_Users u, aspnet_Applications a WHERE u.UserName=@UserName and a.ApplicationName = @Application AND u.ApplicationId = a.ApplicationId))

Exec dbo.aspnet_Membership_ResetPassword @Application, @UserName, @Password, 10, 10, @PasswordSalt, -5
