Hi All,

OK, here is what I went through yesterday:

I couldn't get 4.3.1 to work so I tried going back to 4.0.3.  I deleted my website, deleted my DNN database and started from scratch.  I went through the install instructions and I probably overlooked a few steps with 4.3.1 in regards to setting up the logins and database user and physically setting the W2K NT AUTHORITY/NETWORK SERVICE user with full permissions on the database.

OK, so did I get it to work. Not at first.  I first tried with a SQL 2000 database, then a SQL 2005 database with no luck.  I was getting the same error "Object reference not set to an instance of an object.".  I finally was able to get 4.0.3 set up with a SQL 2005 Express database.  This took a couple of tries of resetting IIS and stopping and starting the SQL 2005 Express and SQL 2005 services.

Tonight, I am going to see if I can upgrade to 4.3.1.  I will let you know how I make out.

One question I have is in regards to SQL 2005 and instances.  I tried using the instance name when attempting to setup a DNN 4 with a SQL Server 2005 (not Express) and the application gave me an error that I could not specify an Instance.  Is this something pertaining to DNN 4?  If I don't specify an Instance, how does DNN know if it my Instance of SQL 2000, or which of 2 instances of SQL 2005 I have or even SQL 2005 Express?

Quick one that is worth checking if you get this error when you install... check that you have actually set the database connection and not just altered the comments.............. Like I did. D'oh!!!

Hi All,

OK, I was now able to get it to work.  The other day I resorted to doing a clean install of 4.0.3 (deleted the website, created a new blank website, copied the files to the website directory, created the database, set the connection strings, browsed the website).  I came to the conclusion that I could only get the install to work with SQL Express and not SQL 2000 or SQL 2005.

Yesterday, I made a backup of the database and the website, renamed web.config to web.backup, copied the install files from the 4.3.1 install, copied the relase.config to web.config, copied back the connection string and the keys from web.backup, changed the install template from DotNetNuke to SmallBusiness, and browsed the site.

The strange thing that happened is that it looked like it went through the install but it never reached the point where the link occurs to browse to your site. I waited about 15 minutes before closing my browser and then browsing to the site again.  It seems like it worked.

I got this when I tried to install 3.3.2 and 4.3.2 at the same time, but if you have a slower machine you could also have this problems.  It appears that this is a timout issue and the Thread is being aborted because it thinks the process is deadlocked.  This is a .Net issues not a DNN issue. We have added quiet a few core modules and I think we are hitting a threshold on slower machines or machine that are doing other things while the install is being done.

I would do a clean install and this time move the all the modules except the HTMLText and Links module to another directory.  Then acceess the site and this time is should completed.  You can then copy the other modules back into the \install\module\ directory and run DNN using the following URL.

{your domain}/install/install.aspx?mode=InstallResources

I am having the same problem as the original poster. I am running Windows Advanced Server 2003 & IIS 7.0 (remotely). Upon placing all the files properly and editin the web.config. The install script runs but at the botom of the script it indicates 'Portal Failed to Install'.

I followed your advice and removed ALL modules excpet for Links & HTML Text. It gives the same error message that it failed to install and upon trying to open the portal I get the OP's "Object Reference.... " message.  As far as compuer speed goes, I highly doubt this is an issue, the machine is a 2.8GHz Xeon w/ 2GB RAM, RAID, etc.

Any other ideas of what to look at. As far as connection string issues go... the database was updated proplery with the new tables and what not, so I don't know if it's possible that there could sitll be a problem with that.

I think you are on to something. I have 4 modules not installed then I have issues with the portal. I am reinstalling the resource independantly. Is there a way to reinstall the portal?

Thanks
