How do I create a new module based on an existing module?

I basically want to clone the html module, and add an iframe to the cloned module, so that I can display the html module beside the iframe (in 2 columns).

Or is there a way to display 2 modules side by side on a page?

the easiest ways to display an iframe aside html are:
a) install free ckeditor provider (download from dnnckeditor.codeplex.com) and use "insert iframe" button
b) modify the skin of your website to provide two panes side by site.

if you need to modify an existing module, install source version of the module,  clone the module folder inside /desktopmodules (and /app_code folder for WSP modules) and adjust module namespace in all files. Modify module and module definition names and friendly names inside .dnn file not to conflict with existing module. Now you are save from being overwritten on upgrades.
