I'd bet (don't know) that the modules list makes a web service call from JavaScript.

I'd further bet (again don't know) that in your live environment, for some reason, the web service's security does not allow that call. I suggest you set up fiddler. Record it working correctly at home, and again incorrectly in live, and compare the traces. In the trace there should be some kind of clue, a return code, a message, even the absence of a reply, that will get you started on hunting this down.

BTW reinstalling Java will NEVER help this kind of problem. JavaScript and Java are unrelated except for having similar names.
