This is because your server is not setup to allow SQL Server Authentication, it only permits Windows Authentication. If you open Enterprise Manager and right click your server and select Properties (I think, bear with me I'm doing this from memory because I use SQL 2005 :D) somewhere in there should be a setting to allow Mixed Mode Authentication. If you activate that, you should be able to connect (assuming the User Name and Password are correct).

EDIT: Here's an article that might help (and near the bottom it describes how to change the authentication mode): http://www.windowsecurity.com/articles/SQL_Server_2000_Authentication.html

Hi

thanks for the prompt reply.

I changed the SQL Server Authentication to mixed mode (SQL server and windows). I had to do this from the registry since it didnt change to mixed mode when I used the radio button. anyway, now I get this message:

DotNetNuke Upgrade Error
The Assembly Version ( [ASSEMBLYVERSION] ) does not match the Database Version ( [DATABASEVERSION] )

ERROR: Could not connect to database.

The stored procedure 'dbo.GetPortalAliasByPortalID' doesn't exist.

what now?

Hmmm....not sure about that one. You might try checking the log files which are in the Providers/DataProviders/SqlDataProvider (if you are using 4.x Source, then the Providers folder is in the Website folder). Once you find them, any of the logs with a size greater than 0KB have errors in them and you might be able to get some more information from them
